Position description :
The Optical System Engineer will join the Module R&D Design Group, part of the wider Imaging Division, with expertise in optical, mechanical and electrical design. The Group design precision opto-mechanical technologies and assemblies, incorporating ST silicon sensors and optics to produce state-of-the-art high performance optical and photonics products.
Our module products primarily target the consumer market, with applications in mobile phones and portable equipment such as laptops and tablets. The products are designed and developed in cooperation with other ST groups around the world and in partnership with suppliers and subcontractors.
With a strong design emphasis on cost and industrialisation for very high volume, ST modules are developed using state of the art materials, components, and precision automated assembly processes.
Wafer-scale diffractive optics has recently brought about new possibilities and performance in a myriad of applications. The Module R&D Design Group designs high performance diffractive optical elements, with manufacturing in ST’s own cutting-edge 300mm silicon wafer fab.
The primary role is the design of optical components, including VCSEL beam shaping optics and objective lenses for use in ToF modules (NIR and SWIR) It requires highly skilled and proficient use of simulation tools such as LightTools and Zemax to establish design performance, sensitivity to manufacturing variations, and estimate yield.
They will support Mechanical Designers in tolerance and thermal analysis, and optimise optical designs to accommodate and ease the assembly or module integration. Strong practical skills will be required for characterisation of optical components in dark room environment following laser safety standards and risk assessments. They will support the product level laser safety certification.
The Optical Engineer will collaborate with engineers across multi-disciplinary teams from silicon architecture, sensor design, systems engineering and applications to ensure appropriate system-level approach to ST ToF module design.
Particular emphasis will be required to create simulation models to assess performance at the product and system level, illustrating pros and cons over a range of potential design implementations.
During a new project feasibility phase, the Optical System Engineer will provide key inputs to define the technology, functionality and performance target specifications, lead studies for initial product concepts and design and implement prototypes for performance evaluation.
They will also help define optical technology and module architecture roadmaps to support the definition of medium to long term new products, through R&D scouting activity, identifying breakthrough technology and external benchmarking.
The candidate will have the opportunity to take a lead role in the project team to coordinate the design integration of optical, electrical and mechanical components.
Post-Graduate Degree (PhD preferred) in Optics or Physic
Track record of design & modelling optical components and systems, with an in-depth understanding of physics, radiometry and photonics
LightTools for system optical design, Zemax or CodeV for tolerance/sensitivity analysis and yield estimation (Monte Carlo).
Knowledge of design for manufacture techniques, and a design process lead by assessment of risks through DFMEA
Familiar with the design of optics to perform illumination diffusing and flattening operations, including diffractive optical elements
Experience of optical design for low-cost high-volume manufacturing using injection-moulded polymers or wafer scale process techniques
Extensive experience in setting-up and performing optical measurements in dark room environment, defining and following laser safety procedures. Strong proficiency in Matlab or Python.
